There are many things that we can speculate about iOS 6, but one thing we know for certain is that the built in YouTube app is gone. iOS falling out of love with Google’s video sharing service should come as no surprise, as should the fact that there is now a standalone version of the app available ready to plug the gap. Even better, the YouTube app has been updated and improved so that iPhone and iPod Touch owners can enjoy an even better experience.
You’ll notice that we’ve not mentioned the iPad. This is because there is currently not an iPad optimized version of the app available. This is something that will be addressed in the not-too-distant future, but for now it is owners of smaller iOS devices that are getting the YouTube treatment. Straight away, you can’t help be notice the new interface which not only looks a good deal sleeker than the previous built in app, but allows for easier navigation.
New sharing options make it possible to share interesting videos you find through Facebook, Twitter, Google+, email and messages, but it’s disappointing to find that video uploading is not a feature of the app. This is not a deal breaker, and practically every iOS user is going to – and indeed should – install the dedicated YouTube app as it is far better experience than using the mobile version of the YouTube web site
Other new additions include access to VEVO music videos and a handy voice search option. If you’ve seen the Android version of the YouTube app, you’ll know pretty much what to expect, as this is almost exactly the same. While browsing and searching has been made easier than ever, there is also an overhauled channel guide which provides you with easy access to content you may be interested.
You can find out more and download a free copy of the app by paying a visit to the YouTube for iOS review page.
