FileMindIf you find that Windows Explorer does not meet your requirements for browsing and managing your files, you have no doubt taken a look at some of the many replacement utilities that exist. Many such tools improve on the idea of Explorer but few offer anything particularly new. The sane accusation cannot be levelled at FileMind which provides a traditional means of accessing files and folders as well as something a little more interesting.

A cursory glance reveals nothing especially out of the ordinary, but spend a few minutes investigating and you’ll find that there’s plenty o get excited about. FileMind is not dissimilar to a web browser, and tags the idea of hyperlinks and tag clouds in a new direction. To make it easier to access the files you access most frequently, an enlarging of label and color coding make such files easier to identify.

Just like in a web browser, FileMind gives you the option of creating shortcuts to your most frequently used folders so you can access them via the toolbar wherever you may be. But searching is where FileMind really excels. To the right of the program interface you’ll find a blog-inspired tag cloud that can be used to drill down to files of a particular type or with a particular extension, or even by access date.

This is not the only search option available as you are able to use the address bar to perform file searches. Start typing and results will be displayed in real time so you can jump to what you’re looking for with a minimum of fuss. Search results can then be further filtered by clicking the right hands tags – a great way to perform more fuzzy searches when you’re not sure exactly what you’re looking for.

You can find out more about the free beta version of the program and download a copy of the app by paying a visit to the FileMind review page.
